Reflecting on the museum, its educational function and its audiences, the profile of a public that is invisible to the institution emerges: its employees. This internal public, made up of receptionists, assistants and security personnel comes in daily contact with cultural goods, work with their preservation, but with no specific knowledge of the area. In view of this problem, the experience of the Staff Training Program is presented, conducted with the employees from different departments of the Pinacoteca. The text was published for the International Seminar Dialogues in Education, Museums and Art, held in 2010 at the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo and Santander Cultural of Recife and Porto Alegre.

“So what does that mean? What does it look like? It means embracing our narrative function unabashedly and with intent. It means recognizing the urgency behind our role as social institutions and experimenting boldly. And it means thinking creatively about how we do our work. Sometimes this is the biggest challenge of all—imagining new models of practice when tied to old habits of mind. What follows are some considerations for thinking creatively about the work of narrative construction.”

“We present some thoughts on the models most commonly used in partnerships developed by the Education Deaprtment at the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo. We will concentrate our analysis on the experience of partnerships that we call Shared Education, establishing the ideal profile for partners participating in this system, in which they are jointly responsible for the creation and development of educational activities. As an example of this experience we present a case study of a partnership between the museum and an NGO that works with underprivileged young people by offering them education in video.”

“What are the links between communities and collections? Were the Sikh community only interested in Sikh related exhibitions and objects? How do we sustain relationships with communities after such an exhibition ends? What about other equalities such as class, disability and gender and how do they intersect? And what about communities where there is no collection – there is no Africa gallery for example and yet there is a high proportion of people of African descent in the UK?

To explore some of these questions I secured funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund for a three-year project, Capacity Building and Cultural Ownership – working with culturally diverse communities.”

The essentially educational nature of the museum as an institution is accepted unanimously in the literature of contemporary museology, but presents very different implications in practice.

The text discusses two needs: “enabling the educational aspect to permeate other environments outside of the areas specifically targeted for this work in museums, and expanding proposals based on the characteristics of the museum and that view their target audience, not only as schools, but the public in general, in other words, the entire potential public of the museum.”
